Kennedy, U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy and actress Marilyn Monroe at a private party in the Manhattan home of Arthur and Mathilde Krim after President Kennedy’s 45th birthday celebrations at Madison Square Garden. Singer Harry Belafonte is in the background and historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. is standing off to the side smiling. This is the only officially published image of the Kennedys and Monroe. At the time, Secret Service had instructions not to allow photographs of the President and Monroe together, but this photograph survived only because the negatives were in a dryer when the rest of the film was confiscated. However, it is worth nothing that it was very common for the image-conscious President to have films confiscated in even the simplest of situations, lest anything unflattering or unphotogenic be recorded. 50 years ago tonight!
